Quinn

I’m just about packed when my doorbell rings. That’s not a good sign. It’s six in the morning—way too early for me to be up, but I couldn’t sleep. All I could think about was getting back to Everly. It’s kind of like the times I was with her. I always felt hollow that first time back in my own bed.

The doorbell rings again and then there’s knocking. And of course, shouting. Because…Carter.

“Open up, mon bro!”

I really need to get some kind of gate or something for my property.

I take my time zipping up the suitcase and taking it to the living room. When I open the door, I’m not happy at seeing Carter. I’m even less happy that both Sydney and Grady are there too.

“What the fuck, Carter? You promised to keep your mouth shut until I talked more with Everly.”

“Believe me, we weren’t happy when he showed up last night,” Grady says, stepping into my house without invitation. Sydney steps up.

“Oh, you didn’t sleep well, did you?” She gives me a hug, which makes Grady growl. We pull apart and both of us roll our eyes. She joins Grady, leaving Carter standing on my porch.

“I guess this is all your fault, and I might kill you if you even thought about telling Mom and Dad.”

He looks offended, like he didn’t just drag Grady and Syd to my house at the asscrack of dawn.

“I would never do that. I mean, I don’t want to be the one to tell them you knocked someone up.”

It’s my turn to growl, but he ignores it, giving me a big hug.

“I’m going to be the best uncle.”

Of course, he’s thinking about what this means to him.

I shut the door and join them in the kitchen. Syd is already making coffee, because that’s Syd. She’s a nurturer in a lot of ways.

“This girl,” Grady starts but Syd interrupts whatever he was about to say.

“Everly,” Syd says as she punches the coffee to brew, “is not a girl. She’s a woman and a damned good one.”

It’s then that I remember Syd knows her from growing up in Juniper. “How well do you know Everly?”

“Pretty well,” she says, leaning against the kitchen counter. “Her older brother Wyatt was a few years ahead of me. Everly a few years behind me. Oh, and Mason. He’s the baby.”

“He doesn’t look like a baby. He was at the ER last night. He’s huge, but not as big as the older one,” Carter says. He and Grady are sitting at the counter.

“Wait, Wyatt? The one who owns the bar?” Grady asks.

“Yes,” Syd says.

“He’s the one who raised them?”

She nods.

“Where were their parents?” Carter asks.

“They died when Everly was…I think around twelve. Car accident. Wyatt was actually making a name for himself on the bull riding circuit at the time and had to quit that and come back to Juniper full time. He sold the family farm and with the help of the Golds—those are Becca’s parents—and he opened the bar and grill.
